Tide students get day off for rare weekday game
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama’s first weekday football game on campus in 61 years means a day off for students.
The Crimson Tide moved its game with Georgia State up two days last week to Thursday, Nov. 18, prompting administrators to cancel classes for the day with thousands of fans descending on campus.
The students will get one day off instead of two for the fall break to make up for the lost class time.
Alabama has not played a weekday game on campus since 1951, when Villanova visited Denny Stadium - now Bryant-Denny - on an October Friday night.
Alabama requested that the Georgia State game, initially set for Saturday, Nov. 20, be moved to avoid a short week of preparation for the Iron Bowl visit by Auburn on Friday, Nov. 26. That Friday game would have broken the weekday streak.
