Alabama has second most SEC Academic Honor Roll student athletes
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A total of 101 University of Alabama student-athletes representing nine different teams were named to the Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Tuesday. The Crimson Tide ranked second in the conference in total honorees. South Carolina was first with 109 while Georgia came in third with 100.
The women’s track and field team led the way for UA, following up its top-20 finish at the recent NCAA Outdoor Championships, with 24 honorees, the second highest total of any team or school this spring. The rowing team, which completed its fourth season as an NCAA Division I sport this spring, posted its highest total ever with 23 honorees.
The men’s track and field and baseball teams both garnered 12 honorees each. The men’s track and field team posted a top-25 finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, while baseball won the NCAA Atlanta Regional and advanced to a super regional.
Nine members of the Tide’s SEC Champion softball team came away with the league honor. The men’s golf and women’s tennis teams both placed six student-athletes on the list. The men’s golf team advanced to the 2010 NCAA New Haven Regional, while the women’s tennis team finished the season with a national ranking of No. 71.
The Tide’s SEC Champion women’s golf team, which finished a program-high third at the NCAA Championships, placed five student-athletes on the list. The men’s tennis team, which qualified for the 2010 NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 34, rounded out the honorees for Alabama with four.
To earn a place on the honor roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.0 or better grade point average for either the preceding academic year or their career and be a sophomore or better in academic standing. The spring list honors those student-athletes that participate in baseball, men’s and women’s golf, rowing, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s track and field.
The Tide had 51 and 55 student-athletes named to the SEC Fall and Winter Academic Honor Rolls, respectively, giving Alabama a total of 207 upperclassmen on the honor roll for the 2009-10 academic year. The league’s freshmen will be honored later in the summer.
