BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A combined 43 Alabama student-athletes representing 13 teams were named to the 2010 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced Monday.

The Crimson Tide’s National Champion football team was first among all men’s sports with 12 honorees, more than twice as any other football team on the list. This figures comes on the heels of UA football leading the nation last fall with 13 graduates on its roster, a number that increased to 21 for the National Championship Game following December ceremonies.

The 2010 SEC Champion softball team was next for the Tide with all five of its freshmen making the list. Gymnastics, rowing, and women’s track and field each had four student-athletes recognized, while baseball, soccer, and men’s swimming and diving each had three honorees. Men’s basketball, women’s golf, women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, and volleyball completed the Tide’s list with one student-athlete a piece.

To earn a spot on the honor roll a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution, be on scholarship or a letterwinner, have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution and have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

The 2010 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2009-10 academic calendar.
